Defeating Holiday Havoc

Security: It Comes With the Stamp®

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is mandated to protect each one of your special holiday cards and packages. Postal Inspectors, Postal Police Officers, and our specialized support staff work tirelessly to safeguard your gifts and well wishes so they get to their destinations securely. Additionally, the Inspection Service wants you to understand the many ways you can help protect yourself. It is our goal to help keep you safe from the Holiday Havoc that comes from theft of mail, falling victim to holiday scams and fraud, and prohibited items entering the mail stream. See our tips below.

Check out the Mail & Package Theft page for ideas to keep your mail and packages safe during the holidays, and throughout the whole year.
Mail & Package Theft

MAIL THEFT MAYHEM

Protect your mail from theft!
When doors and mailboxes go unmonitored, a visible pile of delivered mail and packages is a signal to thieves that you are not home. Avoid the mayhem and use HOLD MAIL and HOLD FOR PICKUP at the local post office if you will be out of town or away for an extended period.

Use CUSTOMIZE DELIVERY to schedule a delivery when you know you will be home, and INFORMED DELIVERY so you know what mail to expect.

If you suspect a mail theft, report it! When you do not report a mail theft, the thief gets away with their crime. Mail theft is serious, and reporting it is as easy as a phone call: 1-877-876-2455.

CHARITY SCAM CHAOS

Beware of charity scams!
Fraud is always a problem, but especially during the holidays when people are feeling generous or are shopping for a bargain. Avoid the chaos of being scammed by researching and vetting any charities before donating, as well as any offers or deals that seem too good to be true (because they usually are). Always make your check out to the charity, never to an individual. Do not be pressured to give money on the spot.

PHISHING BAIT BEDLAM

Beware of smishing and phishing!
The Postal Service does not send text messages or emails unless you signed up for them and entered the tracking number first. Messages from the Postal Service NEVER contain links, and there is no cost for this service. Avoid the bedlam of being baited by phishing and smishing! Do not respond to unsolicited text messages, emails, or phone numbers you don't recognize, and do not click on links or respond to the message. Never send personal or sensitive information over a text message or in an email.

PROHIBITED MAIL PANDEMONIUM

Keep the mail safe from dangerous and prohibited items!
If you send a toy or electronic as a gift, the batteries--especially lithium batteries--can cause a fire or explosion in the mail system. Taking them out before sending reduces the risk of fire hazard. Fireworks are an explosive and sending them through the mail is illegal. The sender as well as the receiver can face federal penalties. Avoid the pandemonium caused by prohibited items in the mail stream by being aware of what can, and cannot, be sent through the mail.
