0:00 (Evil laughter) 0:11 Hi. I'm Haley Elliot, 0:13 Director of the United States Postal Inspection Service's Crime Lab. 0:16 Chilly weather is on the way, 0:18 marking the start of the holiday season. 0:20 You are no doubt starting to think 0:21 about mailing cards and packages to those you love, 0:24 and if your card list is as long as mine, 0:26 you may be looking to score a deal on postage, 0:28 like this online offer. 0:30 50 percent off? It's a steal of a deal. 0:32 But what's really getting stolen is your money. 0:35 Don't get snowed by counterfeit stamps. 0:38 The Postal Service does not sell stamps below the face value. 0:41 Legitimate retailers can sell stamps at a small discount, 0:44 and the stamps are authentic U.S. postage. 0:47 These aren't. 0:49 The number of counterfeit stamps being sold online has exploded 0:52 with many printed outside the United States. 0:55 This is one seizure of counterfeit stamps. 0:57 It's worth about $150,000 face value 1:00 and being sold for half that. 1:03 The fraudulent stamps result in a revenue loss to the Postal Service, 1:06 and ultimately, to you as a mailer. 1:08 At the Postal Inspection Service's Crime Lab, 1:10 our forensic scientists are able to pick out 1:12 the subtle differences between a counterfeit and actual USPS stamp. 1:17 You probably can't. 1:19 Be wary of any e-commerce or online marketplaces on social media 1:22 where stamps are being sold for such a deeply discounted price. 1:26 Your best protection against counterfeit stamps - 1:29 don't buy stamps from someone you don't know. 1:31 And online offers of 50 percent off? 1:34 That's a big red flag. 1:36 Buy your stamps from the U.S. Postal Service 1:38 or an approved vendor licensed by the Postal Service. 1:41 Purchasing from an outside vendor could render your package or gifts undelivered. 1:46 And one more thing, 1:47 buying and using counterfeit stamps is also a federal crime. 1:51 For more information, 1:52 visit uspis.gov. 1:56 Don't get snowed.
