0:00 May is Military Appreciation Month. 0:03 It's a time to pause and remember all those brave veterans 0:06 and active military who have given so much to keep our country safe and free. 0:11 Hi, I'm Andrea Avery, the United States postal inspector. 0:14 Unfortunately, instead of respecting and honoring veterans 0:18 fraudsters are trying to steal their hard earned money through scams 0:21 created and targeted specifically at them. 0:24 In this case, a scammer victimized veterans for millions of dollars 0:28 promising she would help them obtain government benefits. 0:31 I fell in hook, 0:34 hook, line and sinker, Mack Gurley is still angry 0:38 with himself for getting lured into the Ponzi scheme run by Gina Palasini 0:41 I did one of the most stupid things I ever did in my lifetime. 0:45 I wrote a check for $100,000. 0:48 Gina Palasini approached Gurley and other older veterans 0:51 offering to help them obtain government benefits. 0:53 I thought she was representing the VA 0:56 I was even more so convinced when she freely, 0:59 invited me to her house, introduced me to her family. 1:03 Gurley says he truly believed he was getting benefits 1:07 available to him because he was a veteran. 1:09 So what she would do, would convince them to 1:12 reallocate, diversify their assets, into an annuity 1:16 for the family trust, 1:19 But instead of putting that money into an annuity, 1:21 she would put it into her business expense account. 1:24 She would then wire that money from her expense account 1:27 to personal accounts, and then just write checks like it was her job. 1:31 postal inspectors investigating 1:33 showed that mother of four spent most of the money on her children. 1:36 She would take her kids on vacations, 1:38 elaborate vacations. 1:39 Like most Ponzi schemes, 1:41 Palasini's scam unraveled. 1:43 Once the victims started asking questions, 1:45 thats when the excuses started coming out. 1:48 In all, 13 victims lost $2 million. 1:52 Its heartbreaking, 1:54 They worked their entire lives. 1:57 being in the military. 1:58 She targeted those that were elderly, but also those that were veterans. 2:03 Matt Gurley says he has learned a lesson and is less trusting. 2:08 But targeting veterans, he believes, is inexcusable. 2:12 They have reduced themselves to the lowest rank in the human chain. 2:17 Gina Palasini was sentenced to more than six years in prison 2:20 and was ordered to pay more than $2 million in restitution. 2:25 Don't be a victim. 2:26 Check out any financial opportunities to make sure they are legitimate. 2:30 Help spread the word about scams 2:32 targeting veterans and protect those who have protected us. 2:36 For more information and resources, visit USPIS.gov
